In April of 2010, Phoenix native United States Army PFC Joshua Bullis deployed to the Kandahar province in southern Afghanistan with the 595th Sapper Company, 2nd Engineer Battalion. While on a routine foot patrol through an Afghan village, Bullis stepped on a buried improvised explosive device (IED). As a result of the blast, both of his legs were amputated above his knees, as was his left arm above his elbow.
In October of 2011, Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors (JAH4WW) named Joshua as the second recipient of a handicap accessible home.
In 2012, JAH4WW completed the full home remodel including all new flooring for easy wheelchair accessibility, ramps in every entrance, customized bathrooms and kitchen, widened doors and hallways, alterations to the garage to enable easy access from his custom vehicle, and an outdoor patio with a therapeutic Jacuzzi. Furthermore, JAH4WW also provided a fully automated Crestron home system, enabling Bullis to have various control capabilities right from his wheelchair.
