Navy Hospital Corpsman Thomas Henderson, 8404 Field Medical Technician, bravely served our country for four years and three months. He attended Naval Hospital Corps School and received specialized training in North Carolina before attaching to the 3rd Battalion 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune. He was deployed to Helmand Province, Afghanistan as an HN in January 2010. While in Afghanistan, HN Henderson was awarded his FMF device for his service with 3/6.

With just a short time left on his tour HN Henderson accepted a volunteer assignment with 3/6 Lima Company after one of their Corpsmen was injured by sniper fire. On July 4, 2010 – a week before his 21st birthday – HN Henderson was struck by 45 pounds of homemade explosives due to a remote detonated IED blast while on a routine Security Patrol. Through the combined efforts of his CLS trained Marines, a fellow Corpsman, and a timely Army Med-Evac chopper, HN Henderson made it safely to the Camp Bastion Hospital in Helmand Province, and from there endured a five-day journey to NNMC Bethesda.

Corpsman Henderson sustained critical injuries in the explosion, including the loss of his right leg above the knee, nerve damage along the left side of his body, major loss of motor function in his left arm and hand, and moderate traumatic brain injury. His injuries left him hospitalized for three months.

Corpsman Henderson then transferred to SAMMC in San Antonio, TX where he would spend the next two years undergoing extensive physical therapy and a total of 37 surgeries. He was finally medically released from service as an HM3(FMF) on Sep 28, 2012.

Today, Thomas is working towards a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, with aspirations to get a master’s degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics devices so that he may continue to help individuals throughout his life. Mr. Henderson resides in Forney, TX and is engaged to Ashtian. They have a son, Rowan Elic Henderson, who was born on May 08, 2016.

Jared Allen’s Homes for Wounded Warriors has purchased a home in Texas for Corpsman Henderson and will remodel it later this year through our partnership with the Central South Carpenters Regional Council to make it 100-percent accessible, built specifically for his needs.
